Don't Make The Same Mistake That I Did.

From an email to my cousin:

I realized that from my birth until I was age 30 that I always knew what I wanted to do and I always did it.

I wanted to reach a certain point by the time that I was 30 yrs. old and I did it.
Since I didn't feel the need to go any higher or further as an individual I just, unbeknownst to me,
found out about a lot of things that I as an individual didn't need to learn about.
Since I had already finished what I wanted to do in life by age 30, instead of deciding on another goal for myself, I started doing what other people wanted me to do.
Catering to other people who don't seem to know what they want or that do not want to be happy turned out to be a waste of my time.
36 yrs. of lost time and a myriad of unsettling experiences.
I ended up finding myself in a seemingly endless series of traumas, 1 after another.
So, from now on, whether I need to or not, or whether I even have a goal or something personal to achieve... I'm going to have to do only things that I want to do.
Though it may not seem like it to other people, my life up until the age of 30, was fun and easy.
"Fun and easy" is how that I want the rest of my life to be.
That's where you come in...

Doing things for yourself means:
Prioritizing your needs, values, and personal growth, distinct from selfishness, and involves setting boundaries, making authentic choices, and finding intrinsic motivation for activities you genuinely enjoy, leading to greater fulfillment, resilience, and self-worth rather than resentment or seeking approval
It's about self-discovery, pursuing your passions (like hobbies or learning), and building internal validation, not neglecting others, but ensuring your actions align with your true self.
Key Aspects of Living for Yourself:
How to Start:
  • Explore Your Interests: Engage in hobbies like gardening, art, or reading to connect with yourself, as Reddit users suggest.
  • Define Your Own Success: Question societal definitions and align your life with your own vision of fulfillment, say this YouTube video and this YouTube video.
  • Practice Self-Care: Do small things that feel good, like making your bed your way, to build self-respect, notes Psychology Today.
  • Be Honest About Motivation: Ask yourself if you're doing something for you or for others' approval, suggests Psychology Today
