"You Mean It Isn’t?"

This joke was told to a class I was in at Donsbach University in Huntington Beach California in 1982

by Dr. Hans Pfeifer during a lecture.

young man in a quest for knowledge and to understand life's meaning:

After having studied and contemplated as many religious and philosophical treatises available to him

As he possibly could.

That had been available to him in his earlier youth.

Decided to work hard for a period of 10 yrs to earn enough money to travel abroad to wherever his

Search and journey for truth would lead him.

So after the final day of the 10 yr period of hard work and saving money:

He finally sets out upon his life's quest.

And after a few yrs of traveling and searching:

He finds himself at the mouth of a cave high up in the Himalayan mountains in the Himalayas.

Where purportedly there lived and old wise man:

Who knew the meaning of life.

And he walks through the cave to the end of the cave.

And he sees an old man sitting alone at the end of the cave:

All covered with cob webs.

And he speaks to the old man and he says:

"Master I can not tell you how much that I have been through and how hard that I have worked"

"And how hard that I have tried:"

"And have even worked hard for10 yrs to earn enough money to travel the world:

"To find the meaning of life".

"And my search and my travels have led me here to your cave."

"So master please if you will":

"Tell me the meaning of life."

And the old man remains seated and looks up at him through the cob webs and says:

"Life is a fountain."

To which the weary young traveler replied:

"Life is a fountain that's it?"

"You mean to tell me that after everything that I have gone through my entire life and studied"

"And worked hard for::

"For10yrs of my life so that I could earn enough money to travel the world"

"Seeking for and in search of the meaning of life".

"And now I finally find you way up here in this cave in the mountains"

"And that is all that you have to tell me?"

"That life is a fountain?"

And the old cobweb covered master looks up at him:

And shrugs his shoulders:

And says:

"You mean it isn't?"
